Geocache Description:

Glenrock Reserve is found off a quiet cul-de-sac in  Picton.

It has beautiful views of  Stonequarry Creek and the Macarthur to the east of Picton .

The reserve is named after the adjoining “Glenrock” cottage on the western side

Over the years the cottage has had many owners , some of which were the Tarrants.

Clare Ina Tarrant was a twin.  She and her sister Margery Enid were born at Mudgee in 1902 to Lucy and John Tarrant.

One of four brothers, John’s father Thomas Tarrant had settled in Mudgee in the 1850s and was a well-respected citizen.

Like his brothers, John had received a liberal education and owned his business in the township. Married towards the turn of the century, John and Lucy’s firstborn son died in infancy in 1903.

A second son was born in 1905. In 1909, John died at the age of 50.

Both precocious and academically gifted, Clare and Margery entered the teaching profession.

Margery earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at a time where few women were admitted to university. She accepted her first appointment at Taree High School in 1923. Clare’s was at Coonamble Primary.

By 1928, Margery was teaching at Sydney High School on an enviable salary of £300 a year.

A decade later, Margery accepted a post at Picton High School. She bought “Glenrock” at Upper Picton and brought her widowed mother to live with her.

Tragedy struck in 1939 when Margery died at 37. She never married. Lucy Tarrant remained at “Glenrock” where she died in her dotage in 1943.

Having taught at many schools since gaining her certificate, Clare eventually joined the staff at Picton where she remained until she retired.

She died in 1984 and is still remembered today for her uniqueness. She never married. Tarrant Close in Picton is named after the sisters.
