Data założenia tego cmentarza nie jest znana, ale prawdopodobnie powstał w 1915 po zdobyciu go przez Niemców w czasie I w. św. Warto wspomnieć, że twierdzę zbudowali Rosjanie i cmentarz dla zmarłych wyznania prawosławnego istniał tu już od 2 połowy XIX wieku (Nowy Modlin).
Twierdza powstała na terenie posiadającym naturalne walory obronne, docenione już w średniowieczu. Kolejne ziemne fortyfikacje powstały w XVII (szwedzkie) i XVIII wieku (saskie), ale początek twierdzy to rok 1806 i rozkaz Napoleona Bonaparte. Kolejne rozbudowy po 1823 i 1883 przez Rosjan, aż do 1915. Od 1918 w rękach polskich, walki w 1920, 1939 i od 1945 ponownie w Polsce.
Obecnie cmentarz w kształcie litery L, przy czym jego SE część powoli zajmuje cmentarz komunalny. Najstarszy nagrobek z 1915, bo pomnik żołnierzy niemieckich z 1916 został zburzony. Kolejne groby z lat 1917 i 1918 - to polscy żołnierze zmarli w miejscowym szpitalu.
Po obu stronach głównej alei pochówki żołnierzy polskich z lat 1919-1920, zaś w południowo-wschodniej części cmentarza kwatera żołnierzy polskich z lat 1918-1920. W tej części także 2 pomniki: ofiar wojen z lat 1914-1920, na miejscu poprzedniego — niemieckiego, poświęconego bohaterom I wojny światowej i drugi, upamiętniający polskich żołnierzy poległych w latach 1920-1939, odsłonięty 29. 09. 1997 r. Przed tym pomnikiem i z obu jego stron znajdują się groby obrońców twierdzy z 1939 r. Tutaj też widoczne są okrągłe be-tonowe wyloty kominów wentylacyjnych wskazujących na obecność chodników kontrminerskich, należących do nieistniejącej dziś działobitni.
Obok kwatery żołnierzy polskich poległych w 1920 r. znajdują się najstarsze groby cywilnych mieszkańców twierdzy z 1920 r. Ostatnie pochówki pochodzą z przełomu lat 1922-1923, kiedy to zaczęto grzebanie zmarłych w północnej części cmentarza (od strony lotniska). W nowszej części cmentarza, powiększonego po 1929 r., po prawej stronie alei, gdzie nie ma wytyczonych kwater, pochowani są żołnierze niemieccy z 3. Dywizji Pancernej SS Totenkopf i 5. Dywizji Pancernej SS Viking, uczestniczący w bitwie pancernej pod Wołominem w sierpniu 1944 r.
Tutaj też jest mauzoleum — pierwotne miejsce pochówku komendanta Twierdzy płk. E. Malewicza, spoczywającego dziś w grobie obok weterana powstania styczniowego por. S. Słomki.

The date of establishing this cemetery is unknown, but it was probably established in 1915 after the Germans conquered it during the WW1. It is worth mentioning that the fortress was built by the Russians and the cemetery for the dead of the Orthodox faith existed here since the second half of the 19th century (Nowy Modlin).
The fortress was built in an area with natural defensive values, appreciated already in the Middle Ages. The next earthen fortifications were built in the 17th (Swedish) and 18th (Saxon) centuries, but the fortress began in 1806 and was ordered by Napoleon Bonaparte. Subsequent extensions after 1823 and 1883 by the Russians, until 1915. From 1918 in Polish hands, fights in 1920, 1939 and from 1945 again in Poland.
Currently, an L-shaped cemetery, with its SE part slowly being taken over by the municipal cemetery. The oldest tombstone from 1915, because the monument to German soldiers from 1916 was demolished. The next graves from 1917 and 1918 are Polish soldiers who died in the local hospital.
On both sides of the main alley, the burials of Polish soldiers from 1919-1920, and in the south-eastern part of the cemetery, the headquarters of Polish soldiers from 1918-1920. This part also includes 2 monuments: victims of the wars of 1914-1920, in place of the previous - German one, dedicated to the heroes of World War I, and another one, commemorating Polish soldiers who died in 1920-1939, unveiled on 29 September 1997. In front of this monument and from both of its sides there are the tombs of the defenders of the fortress from 1939. Here, too, are visible round concrete outlets of ventilation chimneys, indicating the presence of counter-mining galleries belonging to the now defunct cannon station.
Next to the quarters of Polish soldiers who died in 1920, there are the oldest graves of civilians in the fortress from 1920. The last burials date back to the turn of 1922-1923, when the burials began in the northern part of the cemetery (from the airport side). In the newer part of the cemetery, enlarged after 1929, on the right side of the avenue, where there are no marked out quarters, German soldiers from the 3rd SS Panzer Division Totenkopf and the 5th SS Panzer Division Viking, participating in the armored battle near Wołomin in August 1944 r.
There is also a mausoleum here - the original burial place of the commandant of the Fortress, Col. E. Malewicz, who is buried today in the grave next to the veteran of the January Uprising, Lieutenant S. Słomka.
