Geocache Description:

Back in 1975, an unique exhibition called Sculpture 75, was held in Commonwealth Park.

It was part of the larger Australia 75 festival and it involved 31 sculptures in various forms, some of them even designed to be eaten by visitors.

Bert Flugelman's sculpture, called Earthwork, was indeed unique and incredibly, buried onsite. It was a huge 8  m long metal sculpture and so ,huge earthworking equipment was brought in,  to assist in the huge hole . The ditch was  constructed and then the steel sculpture buried ,as per the photos attached.

The question as to why Flugelman buried his piece is not easy to answer.

National Gallery of Australia curator Lara Nicholls says it is important to remember the context in which Earthwork was made.

"It was a very non-traditional time for the making of sculpture, so the idea often with sculptors was actually to subvert all that had come before them," Ms Nicholls said.

"He decided in fact to bury it and to make a moment out of it and to leave that question in the air hanging .

The buried artwork is only 30m from the cache between the pond , the plaque and the cache.Take time to read the plaque on the small concrete stand on the grass.

The cache is a micro so bring a pen. It is well disguised at GZ .Stealth will be required at all times in a popular park. Please rehide exactly as you found it .
