Between the GZ and the Co-op supermarket was the location of Stepps Stadium. The stadium originally opened in 1940 as a horse trotting track known as Marshall Park after the owner Ralph Marshall. It had a surface made of cinders from the nearby Provan Gas Works. At the end of the war, the site was sold to Allan Gray, a Carluke car dealer. The new owner built grandstands using surplus war materials and renamed it Stepps Stadium. In the early 1950s, the horse trotting venture ended and on 14 Nov 1954, the first stock car racing meeting took place. The organisation of the meeting wasn't great and lap scoring was a problem. A further 2 meetings took place but that was the end of stock cars in Stepps.
