This cache has been archived.

Dirtsqueezer1: Alas, for the second time this cache has been either swiped or destroyed. It is still worth the effort to see the fossils.

Geocache Description:

Along the water side of Chuckanut Drive, 2.5 miles from the main Larabee State Park entrance.

This cache is an "encore presentation" of a previous one that was destroyed during recent construction. As before, the highlight of this site is copious, spectacular plant fossils belonging to the Chuckanut Formation. Fossils include palm fronds, leaves, and sticks that are indicative of tropical conditions about 50-60 million years ago. The prime fossil exposures are located in a road cut on the north side of Chuckanut Drive directly across from the geocache.

Some notes of import for this site:

1) Please be very careful when looking at the fossils in the road cut. Car traffic _must_ be heeded. Watch children carefully.

2) No fossil collecting please in this location. Many schools and geology students come to the site for field trips. We would like to preserve this display.

To get very near the geocache site, park on the water side of Chuckanut Drive about 2.5 miles south of the main Larabee State Park entrance. There is room for about two cars to park in the small turnout for a quick find.
