Welcome to Downtown Belmont! The Belmont neighborhood is in the southeast corner of Charlottesville and is bounded by 6th St SE, Moore’s creek, and the railroad and is named after the Belle Mont Estate. The estate house dating from the early 19th century can still be found at 759 Belmont Ave. After the last owner, Slaughter Ficklin, died in 1886 the Belmont Land Company bought the property and developed the area for residential use. This is when the characteristic grid-system of Belmont was established, and middle and upper class families seeking to avoid the “bustle” of the “city” moved in. At some point in the mid20th century the area underwent a downturn, however the past 30 years have been somewhat of a renaissance (or perhaps gentrification) of the area. The Downtown area has several fabulous restaurants, breweries, and shops and is within walking distance of the Downtown Mall. The cache is hidden in a very recognizable landmark in Belmont. Hide in plain sight by pretending to take a photo like the many Muggles do at this landmark. It’s a moderate sized cache with room for treasures so feel free to bring treasure to swap. There is a gold Sacagawea coin for the FTF.
