History of the Bijou Basin:

The Bijou Basin has seen a few notable figures travel through or call the broad valley basin just east of this location "home".

Chief Black Kettle traveled and frequently camped in this area. Chief Black Kettle of the Southern Cheyenne was a peacemaker who tried to find ways for the Southern Cheyenne to live on the Colorado plains while coping with the wave of whiteman coming from the East.  Chief Black Kettle survived the infamous Sand Creek Massacre of November 1864.  However he was killed 11/27/1868 in the battle of Washita River by George Armstrong Custer and his 7th Cavalry.   When his peace efforts failed, he is quoted as saying “Although wrongs have been done me, I live in hopes…….…”.

John Charles Fremont “The Great Pathfinder” lead many government expeditions to the American West.  July 10th1843 Fremont camped on the buttes in the basin as he documented the existence of the Colorado’s Black Forest for the first time.

Christopher “Kit” Carson the famous western trail blazer and guide often resided between Bent’s Old Fort and the Bijou Basin.  He used the Bijou Basin Creek for navigation when traveling across the CO plains.
