Positioned at the half way point between Merthyr Tydfil and Cardiff, Abercynon was at the centre of the World's Industrial Revolution. Abercynon was very rural until the Glamorganshire Canal was opened in 1794 with its headquarters at The Navigation. In 1804 Richard Trevithick's steam locomotive made history, becoming the first train journey in history hauling a train from Penydarren, Merthyr to Abercynon. Abercynon Colliery (Dowlais Cardiff Colliery) was opened in 1889. At its peak in 1923, the colliery employed 2,700 workers. On 1st January 1947, the colliery was nationalsed by the post World War Two Labour Government. The colliery, with its distinctive sky blue winding gear, closed in 1988.
