Abandoned logging road, climbs 2 miles to stunning mountain vistas. Not reachable until after summer solstice due to heavy snow.
Cache is on top of Mission Peak (Mt Baldy on some maps). Another Cache is within 300 yds in a more difficult location. Park on Beehive road at N 47 17.837, W 120 26.635. No need for a parking pass. On south side of road, find earth berm blocking an old logging road. In about 1/2 mile take Y to the right. Travel through deep woods for a mile to a delightful small mountain lake and open volcanic flows. As you travel upwards you see occasional views toward the north and east which are just little teases of the grand view that pops out in front of you as you get within a quarter mile of the cache. Hike upwards through wind and snow stunted alpine vegetation until you reach the final open area at 6,788 ft. on top.
Oh the view! Glacier peak, the Enchantments, Mt Stuart, Mt Rainier (only 65 miles away), and Mt.Adams are spread out in an unbroken panorama. If you can take your eyes away from the view, search for the cache. On your trip, You may see elk, deer, pikas, and grouse. The site is named Elkview because there are at least 2,000 elk hidden in the trees below you to the south until hunting season in the last week of October. If you only had X-Ray vision! A cache called A Beautiful View is a few hundred yards further up into the volcanic rocks toward Mission Ridge Ski Area.
