Geocache Description:

This collection of caches has nothing to do with the Church Micro series in the UK. Given that the Australian 2016 census indicates that No Religion and Jedi Knight are the fastest increasing classifications of the optional religion question "What is the person's religion?" it is not surprising that there is surfeit of empty churches that have been repurposed.

Kenton Valley Baptist Church or "the Religious Church of Trinitarian Protestants known by the Denomination of Particular Baptists at Kenton Valley” to give the chapel its full title, also known as Ænon Chapel, meaning close to Salem.

John Parker Buttfield became the driving force in the building of the Kenton Valley Baptist Church in 1849. Before its completion he had often held services in any hut available for that purpose.

Ænon Chapel is one of the oldest Baptist chapels in South Australia and has significant associations with the distinctive religious development of the Gumeracha area. It is also an excellent surviving example of the strict Classical styling typical of South Australian Baptist churches in the Colonial period.

The single-storey three-bay building, a solidly built stone edifice, is constructed with a front wall of large coursed sandstone blocks and side walls of coursed random sandstone with a gable roof. Confident classical features include a symmetrical facade with central gabled porch with round-arch openings, flanked by tall round-headed blind windows with projecting keystones.  The church celebrated its centenary in 1949. The building was offered up for auction in December, 1980. The building is now a private residence.

It is not possible to approach the private building.  The best view is from the listed coordinates or the reference waypoint. Using the three numbers on the road marker near the listed coordinates as ABC, the final location of the nearby cache can be calculated.
