Not too far from here is Laughing Jacobs Lake which is said to be named after Jacob Jones (1825-1905), a wealthy Issaquah resident, who owned a shingle mill near the southeast corner of Pine Lake between roughly 1893 and 1900. According to Hitchman’s “Place Names of Washington,” two early settlers, William Bush and Wilford Stewart, named the lake after Jacob Jones when they heard him trying to imitate a loon’s cry on the lake.
This area is part of/next to the upper Laughing Jacobs Creek feeding to the lake (draining close by Beaver Lake) and the area is part of the Laughing Jacobs watershed which spans 3600 acres accross southern Samamish and northern Issaquah. The watershed has parks, open spaces, and important wetlands that help reduce flooding and clean water. It’s also home to bobcats, herons, eagles, deer, and other wildlife.
