Geocache Description:

This is a short northern extension of this cache series along the Birmingham and Fazely Canal. The landscape has changed a lot in the last 250 years, new forms of transport each making their mark.

The canal is 24 km long, and runs between the city centre of Birmingham to the south and Fazely Junction to the North. The canal was built between 1786 and 1789.

Alongside runs the M42 motorway, which was built 200 years later in the 1980's.

Also, a new form of transport is taking shape in the form of the High Speed 2 railway line which will cross the canal between locks 5 and 6. The new rail line will run from London to Birmingham, the section being built here connects HS2 to the West Coast Main Line just north of Lichfield.

Another branch is planned east of the M42, following the road north, with stations near East Midlands Airport, Leeds and York.

As the landscape is changing, it will be interesting to see how construction will progress. Try to take some pictures to show the landscape through the seasons and through the various construction phases of the railway line. This will also give an overview of how the landscape looked before, during and after.

The path can be done by bike (careful) or on foot. The path isn't suitable for wheelchairs or buggies, and can be muddy after rain. Be careful with Geokids along the canal.
