Geocache Description:

I grew up out Riverton and because my father loved to fish 🎣 I grew up loving to fish to.  The Ruahine slipway was one of our go to family spots as there was a good variety of fish to be caught and plenty of space for a picnic 🧺

One of my fondest childhood memory's of this spot is as a family we came to Ruahine for a fish (I must have been only about 10 at the time) and we were having a great time catching Wrasse then all of a sudden the fish stopped biting, which was unusual for this area then all of a sudden 1 of the rods almost totally bent in half. Dad knew something big was on he grabbed to rod and started a massive fight. After 15 mins fighting on light gear, dad reeled in a 6 ft conga eel, this thing was massive with its pinky grey flesh and soul piercing eyes. As he was landing it another of the rods bent like the first, so the first eel was thrown up the rocks and dad grabbed the second reel, another Conga, not as big as the first but still not a small beast was on this fight was shorter but still dad landed it, the the third rod got yanked out of its rocky foot hold in the rocks and as dad reeled in the third and final beast the other 2 eels chased my mother and myself down the rocks towards the water, when your only little that's pretty scary. We gave up fishing for the day after that and enjoyed a picnic instead

even as an adult I come back to this spot frequently and chuck a line in the water just so I can relax ( it's all catch and release for me being as I don't eat fish)

if you decide to chuck a line in make sure you read the fishing rules and regulation posted at the top of the slipway, and a good hint the fish will hit hardest if you use fresh local shellfish

cache is a bison, so contains log only so BYOP
