Geocache Description:

The Graham-Rutledge farmhouse was a very well preserved example of a Greek Revival fieldstone farmhouse, built in the 1840s, and rare in Brampton. The house also has considerable historical value and connection with important historical figures. Most notable figures connected with the homestead were Joseph Graham, one of the original settlers of Peel and a patriarch among the United Empire Loyalists, George Rutledge a veteran of the British Militia who served in the Mackenzie Rebellion of 1837, and William Rutledge, Reeve and Warden of Toronto Township in 1914 and 1915.

It was classified as a Class A heritage building, which means it ranked among the most historically significant in the city.

In 2010, the approximately 170 year old structure was destroyed by fire.

If you stand in the arch-way of the monument and look out over the valley, you can see where the farmhouse was originally located on the other side. There's a new building on the site.

In the early 19th century a stone quarry also existed near this section of the Etobicoke creek valley. Stone from the quarry was used not only to build the Graham-Rutledge homestead, but other pioneer homesteads and the Peel County Jail (now part of the Peel Heritage Complex).

Micro, so BYOP.

(Don't go down the hill behind the monument)
