Srinivasa Aaiyangar Ramanujan was een wiskundige uit India die voor een groot deel de wiskunde zichzelf aan heeft geleerd. Vooral getaltheorie was zijn gebied.
Geboren in 1887 en jong gestorven (op z’n 32e) heeft hij vooral vond ie zelf teveel tijd gespendeerd aan al reeds lang bekende wiskunde, maar dat kwam omdat hij uit een kansarm milieu kwam en hier dus niet bekend mee was. Pas rond z’n 26e kreeg hij de kans om hieruit te ontsnappen en naar Cambridge te gaan. Daar produceerde hij 6 zes jaar – en dan met name in het laatste jaar – een enorme hoeveelheid wiskunde die gelijk zou staan aan wat een andere wiskundige misschien in zijn leven zou voortbrengen.
Hij wordt overigens ook genoemd in de film “Good Will Hunting”, maar dit terzijde.

Born in 1887 an died young (at the age of 32) he wasted too much time (his own words) spending on well-known mathematics, but this was because he came from an underprivileged background and was therefore not familiar with it. It wasn't until around the age of 26 that he had the opportunity to escape and go to Cambridge. There he produced for six years - particularly in the final year - an enormous amount of math that would equate to what another mathematician might produce in his life.
He is also mentioned in the movie “Good Will Hunting”, but this aside.
