Battell Park is the oldest park in the City of Mishawaka, set aside on the north side
of the river in 1881. Shortly thereafter in 1884 a Civil War Memorial was constructed
in the park that symbolized the patriotic and civic minded attitude of the community's
early residents. The monument is made of white bronze and stands 32 feet high, with a
base of 10 feet square.
Each of the four sides of the base names a battle. Shiloh is on the east side, Mobile
is on the north side, Chickamauga is on the west side, and Vicksburg is on the south
side. On all four sides of the monument are representation of army corps badges.
In recent years the Civil War monument was moved from its original site to where it
now stands as part of an expanded "Veteran's Plaza".
