Geocache Description:

The listed coordinates is where the old Camp Gate of Gilwell campsite was, unfortunately the Camp Gate has now been demolished.
This cache is to commemorate the Old Camp Gate which stood there for over 40 years.

The Hong Kong Gilwell Campsite is named after the Gilwell Park in UK, which is the Campsite for Scouts activities and Leader training. In 1920, the 1st Scout Leader training course was held in the Gilwell Park, UK.  The Logo of Gilwell Park is the Axe & Log, which is also a insignia for Leader Training world wide. Most countries and major cities do have a campsite named "Gilwell" and this "Axe & Log" logo is wildly used on most Gilwell Campsite in the world.

The Camp Gate at Gilwell Campsite was erected in 1970s and had a major repair in 2000. For over 40 years, The Camp Gate is a symbol of Scout Training and outdoor activities, also as a landmark for hikers. Same as other Gilwell campsites in the world, The Camp gate has the "Axe & Log" elenment on the top and a Scout Logo on each post.

Unfortunately, due to the requirement of the new lease, the Camp Gate has to be taken down. A farewell ceremony was held on 10th March 2013 and CO has atteneded.

An Article on the Hong Kong Scouting Magazine about the farewell ceremony can be found at:

From where the Camp Gate was, you can have a nice view of Sai Kung and the sea.

Transport
The campsite is 45 minutes walk from the nearest bus stop of route 91, 91M, 92, 96R of KMB at Clear Water Bay Road near Anderson Road.

Cachers can drive to the campsite, but may not be able to park at the private carpark and need to park on the side of road at own risk.

The Cache
This original cache (GC68RRQ) was placed on the day of the Gilwell campsite 55th Anniversary celebration event, to commemorate the lease of the campsite was effective on 26 December, 1960, which was exactly 55 years ago. Unfortunately due to Typhoon, the hint object has been damaged and the cached has been archived. This reborn cache is hidden on the 26 December, 2020. Which is the 60th Anniversary day.

This is 1 of the 3 caches that CO placed on this campsite, so Scouts who camp here can have some geocaching experience while they are there.

There other 2 caches on this campsite are:

  • GC68RCF Gilwell Campsite (Traditional Cache)
  • GC68TGX A little hut at Gilwell Campsite (Multi Cache)

This cache is also part of the "Hong Kong Scout Campsites & Activities Centre Series",
there is a code written on the log sheet, please write that down to work out the bonus cache:

  • GC7PA3Y Chai Wan Scout Campsite on the Scout Hill

The Puzzle
The mobile phone reception of the Gilwell Campsite is bad, but you can get mobile reception once you walked up to the Camp Gate, ofcourse, if you walk higher, the reception is better.  But what if we can't get any mobile reception at all? How do we communicate? Don't worry, we can still use Flag semaphore to communicate to each other.
