Flag of Eritrea

On September 15, 1952, the first flag of Eritrea was formally approved on the day when British establishments surrendered control over the area to Ethiopian-Eritrean Federation. Its light blue contextual was to honor the flag of the United Nations (UN), which had aided the country to self-government. Eritrea Flag encompasses a wreath of two olive branches adjacent an upright branch, cultured green; these also feature the UN flag.

The Ethiopian-Eritrean Federation party adopted the flag in January 1977, consisted of three triangles: red, green, and blue. The red color suggested blood shed for state liberation. The green and blue represented the agricultural wealth and maritime capitals, respectively. In Flag of Eritrea, the yellow star on the red triangle created for national mineral resources.

History of Eritrea Flag

Eritrea is an sovereign nation situated in the Horn of Africa. This multi-ethnic republic hosts a population of about 5 million people. The contemporary country of Eritrea was designed by the unification of several kingdoms and sultanates current in the region. The amalgamation was brought about by the foreign rule of Italy in the region. After the Italians were overcome by the British army in Italian Eritrea in 1942, the country developed a British-administered land until 1952.

Though the British left Eritrea in 1952, the UN “federated” Eritrea with Ethiopia in contradiction of the needs of the people of the nation for whole independence from foreign rule. Several member states of the UN did not provision this act of the UN General Assembly. A period later, the Ethiopian government voids the parliament in Eritrea and seized the country completely.

Eritrea Flag Design and Symbolic Meaning

The flag comprises of three triangles of three diverse colors - red, green, and blue. The red isosceles triangle is founded on the hoist-side and its point is on the fly-side. Two exact triangles lie on either side of the red triangle and together are based on the fly-side. The point of the red triangle splits the bases of the green triangle on the top side and the blue one on the bottom side. The red triangle comprises of vertical olive branch that is surrounded by an olive wreath. The branch and the wreath are to the hoist-side of the flag.

The green color represents livestock and agriculture. The blue color and the red color depict for the sea and the blood lost in the independence struggle. The olive wreath with 30 leaves characterizes the number of years spend on war to attain independence.
