Geocache Description:

As part of the promotions for Dunedin as a staycation they put out a bunch of posters. Some locations I could recognise and well it just seemed like a fun series which could do with some caches to match. I think thats a pretty good plan D.

As this part of New Zealand was settled by the Scottish there is alot of connections with this country. Including its capital Edinburgh... which Dunedin is named after.

I was very spoilt growing up in the UK, a short cycle from roman forts and a short drive from Dover castle. And whilst this is noted as only New Zealand castle I warn anyone from Europe this is not a castle as you know it.... but it has some great history and amazing views. You do not need to go here for this cache.

I have placed a cache near this location and now it is your turn to hunt out a smiley face near Dunedin's Castle by reading up on Edinburgh's Castle;

Cache can be found at S 45° 5A.BCD E 170° 3W.XYZ

Where;

A =  Archaeologists have established human occupation of the Castle Rock (on which the castle now sits) since at least the Iron Age - nd century.

BC = Research undertaken in 2014 identified 26 sieges in its BBCC-year-old history, giving it a claim to having been "the most besieged place in Great Britain and one of the most attacked in the world."

D = In 1D86, on the death of King Alexander III, the throne of Scotland became vacant. Edward I of England was appointed to adjudicate the competing claims for the Scottish crown, but used the opportunity to attempt to establish himself as the feudal overlord of Scotland. During the negotiations, Edward stayed briefly at Edinburgh Castle and may have received homage there from the Scottish nobles.

W = The castle was almost taken in the first Jacobite rising in support of James Stuart, the "Old Pretender", in 1W15.

X = The last military action at the castle took place during the second Jacobite rising of 17X5.

Y= Over the next century, the castle vaults were used to hold prisoners of war during several conflicts, including the Y Years' War (175?–176?)

Z = A mass prison break in 1Z11, in which 49 prisoners of war escaped via a hole in the south wall, persuaded the authorities that the castle vaults were no longer suitable as a prison.

The cache at the time of the placement is a 2l container and whilst there is a pen at the time of placement please bring your own pen to sign the logbook. No photos are accepted as substiute for signing the log.
