Geocache Description:

Buccleuch

Buccleuch is located along the Pinnaroo railway line and Mallee Highway, approximately 140km east of Adelaide.

In 1893, the County of Buccleuch was named after the 5th Duke of Buccleuch, and the town named after the County in 1911.

The first school was a wooden framed building covered in tin attached to the back of stables and opened in 1912.  Later in 1921, a new school was built.  This closed in 1942 and students then attended the Peake school.

The first hall was a tin shed where dances and community events were held.  This was replaced with a new hall in 1961.

Buccleuch railway siding helped settlers alleviate the long haul of supplies from Peake or Sherlock.

The Lutheran church held services in private homes, the first hall, and sometimes in the siding shed before a church was built and opened in 1955.  The church is still in use today.
