Geocache Description:

Milton-Freewater, OR

THIS IS LISTED AS A MULTI-CACHE BUT I'VE CHANGED IT TO JUST A SINGLE COORDINATE CACHE. DON'T SEE A WAY TO CHANGE THE CACHE TYPE WITHOUT DELETING AND RE-POSTING. SINCE THIS IS ONE OF THE OLDEST CACHES IN NE OREGON, I DIDN'T WANT TO DELETE IT. THE CACHE CAN BE FOUND AT THE LISTED COORDS.

The woman referred to in the title of this cache isn’t really named Marie but this is the first name given to her on some memorials and historic references in the Blue Mountain area. You can learn more about her at the cache site.

To reach the site, turn east off of Hwy 11 at the foot of the hill as the highway heads south out of Milton-Freewater. Follow the Harris Park signs to get onto the Walla Walla River Road. You’ll only need to travel a short distance on the River Road. The cache is in a city park at an old power station.

Nobody had logged this cache for three years so I decided to just give the final coordinates rather than having people walk up the steps to figure out the final coords. You still have to walk up the "Trail of the Pioneers" and pass the monument to get to the cache site. There is a good view of the valley at the monument.
The container is in screwtop jar.

For more info on the park, Madam Dorion, the steps and local history see the web site http://www.frazierfarmsteadmuseum.org/pioneer-steps/

4/01/07 - replaced the container, changed the location and redid the page to reflect the new location.

7/20/19 - changed to a single waypoint cache
