TROU SOUFFLEUR LITTORAL

Un Trou Souffleur Littoral (également appelé à tort "Geyser Maritime") est une curiosité géologique située en bordure de mer qui permet d'observer, selon certaines conditions, un phénomène insolite : l'expulsion d'eau ou d'air par un orifice au sol appelé évent.
Même s'il en existe de nombreux de par le monde, la rencontre avec un trou souffleur littoral reste une expérience rare.

Il faut cependant différencier le trou souffleur littoral du trou souffleur intérieur qui résulte d'une étroiture dans un conduit souterrain ouvert à ses deux extrémités, créant ainsi un souffle d'air sous pression.
GEOLOGIE

Un Trou Souffleur Littoral se compose de plusieurs structures géomorphologiques caractéristiques et interdépendantes :

- un chenal immergé,

- une cavité souterraine semi-immergée,

- une cheminée communiquant avec la surface par un orifice au sol (l'évent).

Ainsi, la cavité souterraine communique à la fois avec la mer via le chenal et la surface via la cheminée.
PROCESSUS

L'activité d'un trou souffleur littoral dépend directement de la force et de la direction de la houle.

Il faut donc distinguer deux phases : le flux et le reflux.


Lors du flux, la mer s'engouffre dans le chenal sous-marin et va comprimer la poche d'air située dans la cavité souterraine.


Lors du reflux, la mer se retire et la force de l'air comprimé devient ainsi de façon brutale nettement supérieure à celle de l'eau et l'expulse violemment par la cheminée.
L'observateur extérieur voit donc une gerbe d'eau jaillir de l'évent.

Il ne s'agit donc pas d'un "geyser" à proprement parlé (dont le mécanisme est totalement différent) bien que la finalité soit semblable.


EARTHCACHE

Pour valider cette earthcache, il vous faudra vous rendre aux coordonnées indiquées qui se trouvent au "Martin Bouffe" (ou "Narine de Neptune"), le célèbre Trou Souffleur de Port-Pin puis répondre aux questions suivantes à l'aide des informations données dans le descriptif et de vos observations sur le site.

1. Depuis le PZ, SANS VOUS APPROCHER DU BORD, observez et indiquez l'état de la mer : est-elle plutôt calme, agitée...? Quelle est l'orientation des vagues ? (observation sur site)
2. Posez une feuille, un bout de papier, une brindille ou simplement votre main au-dessus de l'évent : observez puis décrivez le phénomène qui se produit. (observation sur site)
3. Selon vous, quel est le lien entre l'état de la mer (Q1) et ce que vous venez d'observer (Q2) ? (descriptif)
4. Encore selon vous, pourquoi n'y a-t-il pas d'eau qui jaillit de l'évent ? Justifiez votre réponse en quelques mots. (descriptif)
5. Postez avec votre log une photo sur laquelle apparait à la fois le trou souffleur ET votre pseudo (écrit sur un papier, votre main...). (Vous trouverez si besoin un exemple de photo attendue dans les "spoilers").

BLOWHOLE

A Littoral Blowhole (also wrongly called "Marine Geyser") is a geological curiosity located by the sea which allows to observe, under certain conditions, an unusual phenomenon : the expulsion of water or air through an orifice in the floor.
Even if there are many around the world, meeting a coastal blower hole remains a rare experience.

However, it is necessary to differentiate the coastal blower hole from the interior blower hole which results from a narrowing in an underground duct open at both ends, thus creating a blast of pressurized air.
GEOLOGY

A Littoral Blowhole is made up of several characteristic and interdependent geomorphological structures :

- a submerged channel ,

- a semi-submerged underground cavity ,

- a chimney communicating with the surface through an opening in the floor.

Thus, the underground cavity communicates both with the sea via the channel and the surface via the chimney.
PROCESS

The activity of a littoral blowhole depends directly on the strength and direction of the swell .

We must therefore distinguish two phases : the flow and the ebb .


During the flow , the sea rushes into the submarine channel and will compress the air pocket located in the underground cavity .


During the ebb , the sea recedes and the force of the compressed air thus becomes suddenly significantly greater than that of the water and expels it violently through the chimney.
The outside observer therefore sees a spray of water gushing out of the floor.

It is therefore not a strictly speaking "geyser" (whose mechanism is totally different) although the purpose is similar.
EARTHCACHE

To validate this earthcache, you will have to go to the coordinates indicated which are at "Martin Bouffe" (or "Narine de Neptune"), the famous Trou Souffleur de Port-Pin then answer the following questions using the information given in the description and your observations on the site.

1. From the PZ, WITHOUT APPROACHING THE EDGE, observe and indicate the state of the sea: is it rather calm, agitated ...? What is the orientation of the waves? (observation on site)
2. Place a sheet, a piece of paper, a twig or simply your hand above the vent: observe and then describe the phenomenon that occurs. (observation on site)
3. In your opinion, what is the link between the state of the sea (Q1) and what you have just observed (Q2) ? (description)
4. Again, why do you think there is no water coming out of the orifice ? Justify your answer in a few words. (description)
5. Post with your log a photo on which appears both the blower hole AND your nickname (written on a piece of paper, your hand ...). (If necessary, you will find an example of an expected photo in the "spoilers").
