Geocache Description:

This cache is to celebrate the Linden Oak, and is named in honor of Ancient One a cache placed nearby by Divervan in 2004 that was archived in 2019. The Linden Oak is one of the largest white oak trees in North America and is the largest in Montgomery County. In 2008 it was measured at 97 feet tall with a spread of 132 feet. The tree probably started growing in 1718, that is 25 years before George Washington was born. In 1973 the red line was planned to pass right over this spot and WMATA planned to cut it down. Idamae Garrott a Montgomery County council member and head of the Metropolitan Transit commission rerouted the red line to save the Linden oak. In 1976 the oak was named to the Maryland Bicentennial trees, a list of all trees in the state thought to be alive at the signing of the declaration of independence. These included the Manchester White Oak in Carroll County, the Calvert Oak in Cecil County, the St. Paul’s Swamp Chestnut Oak in Kent County, and the Linden Oak in Montgomery County. Unfortunately 5 of its lowest braches have been removed and a large branch on the left side of the tree as you face it from the sidewalk broke off in a storm in the fall of 2020. There are 3 plaques comemorating the tree near the sidewalk that goes up to Rockville pike. In 2022 the tree died and in 2023 MoCo topped it for safety. A big piece is being turned into a bench in Ken-Gar Park along Beach Drive North of Knowles Dr. It should be ready in Nov. 2023.

You are looking for a medium sized lock and lock that contains a logbook, pen, and some swag. While you are here take a photo with this awesome tree and post it to your log.

CONGRATS to Zingy125 for FTF!
