The Hampton School was built c 1870 by the sisters of Confederate General Wade Hampton, whose family came toCashiers Valley from Columbia SC to hunt and fish. They bought property here in 1855 and built a hunting lodge where the family gathered in the summer. After the War, Wade Hampton sought solace here in the mountains, and it's said it was here that he learned he'd been elected governor of South Carolina in 1876.
The Hampton family was very involved in life in CashiersValley. They built this schoolhouse for area schoolchildren. The structure was gifted to Cashiers Historical Society in 2018 and moved here and restored in its current location. It is one of six one room schoolhouses still standing in CashiersValley and environs.
