Geocache Description:

Trojmetrová keš

Meranie dĺžky bolo v minulosti celkom výzvou. Hlavne pokiaľ mali dvaja rôzni ľudia namerať rovnakú vzdialenosať. Historické miery boli síce vcelku dobre zadefinované, no vždy to malo háčik.

Veselé lovenie a hlavne nenápadne.

EN listing: Three-metre-long cache

Measuring length was quite a challenge in the past. Especially if two different people were to measure the same distance. Although the historical measurement units were quite well defined, it always had a catch. Thumb - the length of three grains of barley, palm - the distance between the end of the thumb and the little finger on the outstretched palm, reach - the length between the fingertips of an outstretched man, a mile - one thousand two-steps ... it's probably clear. A two-meter-old man measured something other than a tiny woman. Not to mention that stacking 42 grains of grain in a row required quite a solid dose of patience.

At the end of the 18th century, wise heads invented many clever things that make measurements easier for us, such as the metric system (unless you live in America). And at that time, "meter" was defined for the first time as the basic unit of length. In determining it, scientists of the time thought about the ordinary people, that they would not have to run around the world with a pocket of barley or argue who's feet is better measuring tool. They took it in a purely abstract way and told themselves that the line between the equator and the North Pole, which runs through Paris, is exactly ten million meters (for the scientific fellows, it was not a line but a meridian). Later, they also made a model meter rod from fine alloys, and then changed it several more times to today's definition derived from the speed of light. It's great, today we can measure with an accuracy of one atom, plus minus. Approximately.

The cache is located approximately on the published coordinates. No need to climb over fences. It is about a meter above the ground (or a little more) and has about three meters (plus or minus an atom or two). Happy hunting.
