One Thousand Twenty Fifth #8 in the Famous People (FP) Series - Max Load Bridges

Famous Person Maxwell "Max Load" Bridges was born on April 1, 1957, to Jo "Mama" and Mortimer "Morty" Bridges of Oxnard, California. (Jo and Morty are no relation to Joe and Molly Bridge of Norcross, Georgia, who were the parents of our 2019 Famous Persons, the Bridge Brothers.) Jo ran the household and was an excellent cook. She was famous for the casseroles that she brought to the pot luck dinners at the Shady Palms United Methodist Church. Morty was the elementary school P.E. teacher, football coach and sixth grade academic advisor.

Maxwell had an uneventful childhood. With his mother's cooking and under his father's workout regimen, Maxwell became big and strong. Due to his speed and size, as a fifth grader he became the starting fullback for the elementary school team. His size and raw power earned him the nickname of "Max Load."

Max continued to play football in Junior High School. Even then the film clips from the local news broadcasts began to catch the interest of college coaches and NFL scouts. In 1971 he entered Dowdy High School as a freshman. Prior to the Fall of 1971, the Dowdy Hoodies, not to be confused with the Howdy Doodies, had never had a winning season. Max, to no one's surprise, not only made the team as a freshman but also became the starting fullback. Here he earned the nickname "Max Load" Bridges. The Hoodies had a winning record during all of Max's high school years. Their growing reputation drew good atheletes into the district well into the future, even after Max departed for college.

Academics were not Max's strength. His mother and father tutored him every night to keep him academically eligible through high school. What Max lacked in intelligence, he made up for with, well, disinterest. After his junior year, Max decided it was time to go on to college and he declared himself eligible for the college draft. After it was explained to him that the college draft is not where colleges draft high school atheletes into their programs, Max accepted a scholarship offer from Mid-Central State. It was not an academic scholarship.

Max excelled at Mid-Central State. He broke school rushing records all four years. Finally, on January 28, 1975, Max was drafted several rounds after Walter Peyton. During Max's third NFL season, he shattered his femur and was forced to retire.

Max retired to Dallas. He was honored by the Parks & Recreation Department with the installation of a Town & Country bicycle and pedestrian bridge. A plaque at the southest corner of the bridge honors "Max Load", (a.k.a., "Five Ton" or "10,000 Lbs").

Not much more is known or has been made up about Max Load Bridges.

Please note that, and I mean this in all sincerity, there is absolutely no connection whatsoever between Max Bridges and FP #768 Corri English.
