A walk in the woods along the Mattabesett Trail in part of the Cockaponset State Forest.
The Mattabesset Indians came down from Middletown to hunt in this area they called Coginchaug, meaning long swamp. In 1708, this area, now known as Durham, was granted a patent by the Governor of Connecticut and became a Town.
From Route 79 in Durham, take Old Blue Hills Avenue for about .7 mile.
Park at 41* 27.578' 072* 39.698' Jump the curb to pull off the road if you can. Look for the blue blazes and the trailhead.
The hike will take you past the rock overhang known as the Coginchaug cave. There are some beautiful ash and white oak trees in the small valley near the overhang. There is a lot of wildlife in the area including deer, rabbits, turkeys and coyotes. I have also spotted some large turtles- please do not disturb them.
Safety Tip: Hunting is allowed in Cockaponset State Forest. If you go during hunting season, go on a Sunday when hunting is not allowed.
