At the cache location you will be standing on the grounds of Robert Gray's plantation known as Hilltop. The plantation once covered some 600 acres along Harrisonburg's eastern edge. Seventeen people were enslaved here including, Jane Simms, the mother of Lucy Simms. It was here in 1855 that Lucy Simms was born into slavery. The school that is named for her is visible from the cache site.
This park is named for Ralph Sampson, a Harrisonburg native, and a former professional basketball player. At UVA he led the Cavaliers to an NIT title in 1980, an NCAA Final Four appearance in 1981 and the Elite Eight in 1983. He was drafted into the NBA by the Houston Rockets in 1983, averaging 21.0 points and 11.1 rebounds his rookie seaason. He also played in the All-Star Game and won the NBA Rookie of the Year award. In 1985 he won the MV at the All Star Game, and during a loss to the Denver Nuggets, he managed to record 30points, 15 rebounds, 8 assists, and 5 steals, becoming the first player in NBA history to accomplish this feat since the NBA began recording steals. After his NBA career came to an end, he was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, and named as one of the ACC's 50 best players. He has been inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, and named a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame's class of 2012.
