Geocache Description:

creek     /kriːk/

noun

  1. a narrow, sheltered waterway, especially an inlet in a shoreline or channel in a marsh.

Sutton Creek is the part of Dublin Bay that lies between the southwestern part of Howth Head and the northeast end of Bull Island. It forms the southern coastline of Sutton and is bounded by Dublin Road, Greenfield Road and Strand Road.

Improvements to the port of Dublin in the late 18th and early 19th centuries included construction of a south wall and a north (Bull) wall to improve navigation in the shipping channel. The North Wall was completed in 1825 and effectively enclosed an area of the bay on three sides, extending from Dollymount to Sutton. Accumulation of sand north of the wall followed, advancing rapidly northward as a low dune-covered sand spit reaching Sutton Creek by the 1880s.  So the tip of the island across the creek is only around 150 years old!

There are three ways to the cache.  Down the steps 270m to the south, around the back of the dinghy club 150m to the north, or down the giants steps 30m to the south.  Might be a good idea to avoid at high tide.
