Žuželke so zelo raznolika in številčna skupina živali, saj poznamo približno milijon vrst, kar je več kot vseh drugih živali skupaj. Neopisanih vrst je verjetno še nekajkrat več! Telo žuželk je drugače zgrajeno od našega. Sestavljeno je iz obročkov, ki so združeni v glavo, oprsje in zadek. So nevretenčarji, kar pomeni, da nimajo hrbtenice iz vretenc in notranjega ogrodja iz kosti. Njihovo ogrodje je oklep iz hitina. Na glavi imajo tipalnice, s katerimi lahko tipajo, vohajo, zaznavajo vibracije in tok zraka ali vode. Imajo par velikih sestavljenih oči, poleg teh še posebne pikčaste oči za gledanje na daljavo. Posebnost so tudi različno grajene obustne okončine, s katerimi lahko žvečijo, ližejo, sesajo, pikajo … Na oprsju so trije pari členastih nog in pri krilatih žuželkah tudi krila. Srce jim utripa v zadku, kjer so tudi prebavila, spolni organi in dihalnice. Žuželke nimajo pljuč in ne dihajo skozi usta, ampak z dihalnicami. To so drobne cevke, ki so razporejene po njihovem telesu kot žile. Oči imajo sestavljene iz več sto šestkotnih oči. Znanstveniki domnevajo, da slika, ki jo zaznajo, spominja na mozaik.

A special feature is the differently built oral limbs, with which they can chew, lick, suck, sting… There are three pairs of articulated legs on the breast and wings on winged insects. Their heart beats in the buttocks, where the gastrointestinal tract, genitals and respiratory tract are also located. Insects do not have lungs and do not breathe through the mouth, but through the respiratory tract. These are tiny tubes that are arranged throughout their body like veins. The eyes are made up of hundreds of hexagonal eyes. Scientists assume that the image they perceive resembles a mosaic.
