I believe this is the first geocache to be placed in Knox County. The cache is a small, camouflage 1 qt. Tupperware container. Please take time to visit the nearby swimming pavillion and paved trails. We think you will enjoy this well kept Galesburg city park.
Legend has it that a young Knox county resident, Albert Sorensen and his fiancee, Andrea Storey use to picnic here. As a sign of their love, the young couple carved a heart into the trunk of a young Oak tree, a tree under which they spent many a happy summer's day. Before the young couple could be wed, Albert was called to arms in the First World War. By year's end Andrea Storey recieved heartbreaking news from the war front that here lover had been killed in action. Andrea never got over her one true love and faithfully returned to their favorite Oak tree summer after summer. Andrea remained faithful to Albert until her death 61 years later. Local residents say that it is Andrea's tears that refill the lake each year.
Located about 100 feet off a foot path and into the woods, the coordinates will take you to the very tree that Albert and Andrea proclaimed their own. It's grown old and grarled, but if you look to it's north face about 20 feet up, you will see the Heart of the Oak. From the base of this Oak, take 15 paces northwest to the cache. Happy Hunting.
