Lewiston, ME is a city of about 37,000 residents and is the second largest city in Maine. In the colonial era, Abenaki bands inhabited the region. Among these were the Androscoggin tribe, which lent its name both to the region and to its main waterway. People of European descent began settling the area in the late eighteenth century.
Lewiston is a city of Franco-American business with the success of the FX Marcotte Furniture store, founded by François Xavier Marcotte. Born in Wotton, Québec in 1859, Marcotte moved to Lewiston in 1878. He began work in the textile mills, like many other French-Canadian immigrants to the United States. However, in 1888, Marcotte spent his life savings of $350 to start a store on the corner of Lincoln Street and Chestnut Street. He would become one of Lewiston’s most well-known businessmen.
Marcotte rented out apartments to new residents, helped them find jobs, and provided furniture from his store on credit. His store sold the essentials for any family, such as baby carriages, wood stoves, and even cutlery.
His business is believed to be the second oldest in Maine. Because of Marcotte’s many financial contributions to Lewiston, his name is honored with street signs, a playing field, and a nursing home. One of these philanthropic contributions included donating $650,000 to the Sisters of Charity in 1928. This donation allowed them to build the Maison Marcotte, now known as the Saint Mary’s Medical Center d’Youville Pavilion, where Marcotte himself retired in his older age.
Today Franco-American customers shop in the same furniture store as their grandparents!

Compte tenu de l’influence de son fondateur, une rue, un parc et un centre d’hébergement portent son nom. En effet, sa philanthropie s’étendit aux Sœurs de la Charité, qui bénéficièrent d’un don de $650 000 de la famille Marcotte en 1928. Il en résulta la Maison Marcotte où F.-X. Marcotte lui-même passa ses dernières années et qui devint l’aile d’Youville du centre médical Saint Mary.
