Dunham House
Codename: OPERATION ANTHROPOID

In June 1940, Winston Churchill decided to establish the first training Central Landing School (later known as Parachute Training School) at the Ringway Airport near Manchester (later to be known as Manchester Airport). This was the location of Special Training School (STS) 51, where allied soldiers were trained to parachute. The first training began on August 10, 1941 with eight Czechoslovak soldiers, Lt. Col. František Lopaur, Vojtěch Lukaštík, Jozef Gabčík, Leopold Musil, Josef Gemrot, Josef Málek, Libor Zapletal and František Pavelka. During the course of their training they stayed at DUNHAM HOUSE. The jumps themselves were performed over the Tatton Park area. Each parachutist on the course performed four to five jumps, with one one of them taking place at night, jumping individually and in groups. By the end of the first year of existence STS 51, 112 Czechoslovak paratroopers trained in Ringway. The paratroopers had a very good reputation in Ringway, they were considered the best jumpers, almost 80% graduates left the course with an evaluation of "excellent". Their popularity has been declared and jokes about Czechoslovak paratroopers that appeared on the information board, which was to be used for routine instructions and daily schedule in the STS 51 building. “A group of Czechoslovak soldiers, trained and dressed, are sitting in a flying plane. The first jump is waiting for them. The English instructor challenges the first to jump. "After you," is the answer. He turns to the next one, but it turns out the same way. The instructor is desperate, but suddenly something occurs to him. He points out of the plane and shouts: "Pub!" All the paratroopers quickly get off the plane. " During parachute training, which took place at the airport from 1941 to 1945, Czechoslovak soldiers completed 3,000 jumps.

CODENAME: OPERATION ANTHROPOID
This was the Czechoslovak special forces mission, also known as 'Daybreak', to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich, Reich Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia.

The government-in-exile felt it had to do something that would inspire the Czechoslovak people and show the world that the Czechoslovaks were useful partners in the Allied grouping. HEYDRICH was one of the most important men in Germany, and his death would be a huge loss and a profound psychological, if not strategic, victory.

Left to Right: Jan Kubiš, Jozef Gabčík, Reinhard Heydrich

Seven soldiers of the Czechoslovak army in exile in the UK, including Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubis, were parachuted by the RAF into Czechoslovakia on the night of 28 December 1941.The operation succeeded in the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich.

OPERATION ANTHROPOID changed history, causing the Allies to immediately revoke the Munich Agreement and ensuring that the Sudetenland, the Czechoslovak borderlands annexed by Germany in 1938, would be returned following the defeat. It also provoked terrible reprisals and came with great costs – including the destruction of the villages of LIDICE and Ležáky – that bolstered sympathy to the Czech cause across the globe. Thousands worldwide named their daughters Lidice as an act of solidarity, ensuring those lost would never been forgotten.

Saints Cyril and Methodius Cathedral, Prague.

Saints Cyril and Methodius Cathedral was where the last stand was made by SOE-trained Czech and Slovak agents involved in OPERATION ANTHROPOID on 18 June 1942. There is a museum in the church crypt dedicated to them as national heroes.
