This cache was placed largely as a Thank You to the geocachers in attendance at A CITO Soirée, an event held in downtown Tama on 24-April-2021. My father grew up in and around Tama and today would be his 101st birthday. He taught me to respect the environment so the event, and this cache, are for Dad, too.
Fallen on Hard Times
Tama has fallen on hard times, and this location is a prime example. About 15 years ago this was the location of the Kupka's Meat Market, a thriving little business where seemingly everyone in town would gather each day for handcrafted deli sandwiches featuring thin-sliced fresh meats of all kinds. This was perhaps the ONE business in downtown Tama that had a bright future, a thriving throwback to glory days of the past, and perhaps Tama's best hope for the future.
I don't recall the date (I'll try to find it and add to the listing) but about 15 years ago the ceiling of the old Meat Market building collapsed without warning. The owners were never able to recover and the entire building was eventually condemned and razed. The COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with the August 2020 derecho, dealt another one-two-punch to downtown Tama. But there is still hope. In late 2020 the City of Tama announced plans to create a "pocket park" at this location.
Conisder taking a seat on the lone bench in this new "pocket park", you might just find something hidden beneath.
Before long, I believe there will be other objects, and maybe more benches, in this little downtown park. Maybe then I'll have to up the difficulty rating?
There are trash cans at nearly every corner in downtown Tama, yup, both of them. Please do your part and collect any debris you find on your journey, and deposit it in any can you can. My father, and his son, would like that and applaud your effort. Thank you.
