Geocache Description:

Regular sized cache located in the Rainbow Basin area short rugged hike off Fossil Bed Road.

JBWright placed this cache while hunting fossils in the Rainbow Basin, outside of Barstow. This is a beautiful desert area managed by the BLM, reminds me of the South Dakota Badlands. The terrain is very rough and the cache is located in a very difficult spot. You don't need special gear to reach it, but it's not for the out of shape either. This area is frequented by geology students and paleontologists, so the cache is well hidden. Please cover it carefully when you're done. The cache is a large plastic container with a number of interesting things. After you find the cache, continue up the dry river bed, when ever you reach a branching take the right-hand path and eventually you will reach a painted box canyon, you'll love the view. Nice place for a picnic, but be careful of the bobcat lair at the far end. The Rainbow Basin area is loaded with fossils; mastodons, tiny three-toed horses, bear-dogs, lots of fish. Watch out for snakes, and don't bother the desert tortoises, they're a protected species. Watch the weather, it doesn't rain in this area very often but when it does there are flash floods!
