Geocache Description:

This cache was hidden when Brendan714, CalHobz and I decided to try to avoid the danger of warm sun on snowy slopes and instead decided to explore the Zephyr Creek Hills.   In mid April 2021, there was still some deep snow lingering in sheltered spots in the trees but the ridge itself was pretty clear and made for good travel. We recorded about 18km, 1200m of ascent over 9 hrs, a longer day than we were expecting, but we did go as far as the more southern summit (2200m) of these fine hills.

From the parking coordinates (Sentinel), make your way to the river edge and find a way to cross (make sure water levels are low, water shoes recommended) : then you need to find the trail and head up South Highwood ridge.  It's a steep climb to begin with but eases off. Once you find the ridge, you stay close to it across several summits before reaching the high point (N 50° 22.152 W 114° 33.593). From there you need to find your way down to the E (staying left is recommended to avoid some steeper terrain), this will drop you down to the col (treed) before you start to go back up again. There is signs of a trail and you'll eventually reach the ridge line (I promise). This is the decision point :  head S towards the more southerly summits (a couple of hours at least roudn trip) or turn back N.  If you head S, the terrain is more open and there are fine view towards the mountains.  We were able to pick a way around the pockets of snow and took a short break on the rocks of the small outcrop to enjoy the views to the west.

Visitors are reminded that the area is bear (and cougar) country - please take the proper precautions when travelling in bear country by carrying bear spray and making lots of noise - thanks for being cautious in the backcountry!
