The beautiful river Dart is below you as it flows towards Totnes then on to Datmouth & out to sea. It rises high on Dartmoor & flows for 75km. Its name is an old Celtic word meaning 'river where the oak trees grow'. This part of the river is popular with kayakers & canoeists but it can rise very quickly flowing heavy rainfall on Dartmoor, creating rapids & powerful currents, thus giving rise to the rhyme:
"River of Dart, oh river of Dart!
Every year thou claimest a heart."
