Providing a base as a municipal boat club since 1979, Prehen boathouse thrived for over 30 years. However over recent times the facility has declined in use and the building has been neglected.
In 2008 the Council resumed ownership of the building from the North West Regional College. The last users of the site were the 'Foyle Paddlers' who had to vacate at the request of Derry City Council in 2014.
It is always sad to see such a once well used facility abandoned and the building derelict. Plans to resurrect the boathouse have come & gone over recent times and in 2019 a public consultation was conducted to consider it's future use - however nothing has developed so far.
In november 2020 planning permission was granted for a new pontoon to be installed adjacent to the boathouse. This will be to help people of all abilities access the river for leisure and sport - including a platform lift. So perhaps this may herald a better future for the boathouse than it's recent past. UPDATE - new pontoon is now in place together with associated lift, ramps and refurbished quayside!..
The container is now a medium tab-lock box hidden inside a camo-bag placed amongst natural camoflage. Section of log from original cache has been taped to replacement note-book, to preserve the proof of first visitors. Some swag items left to swop + space for trackables.
