Great Chishill windmill is one of the very few surviving open trestle Mills. It was built in 1819 on the site of an earlier mill that provided several timbers for the rebuild. It is the only such mill with a fantail for automatic winding. It was in use grinding grist for animal feed until 1951 and was fitted with a new trestle and weatherboarding in 1967. The machinery is virtually complete but currently inoperable. In 2014 the mill was leased from Cambridgeshire County Council for 125 years with an agreement to undertake major restoration. The Trust contracted Bill Griffiths to address the stabilisation of the trestle and the general dilapidation of the buck and tail. The old weatherboarding was stripped from the buck in 2017 and many structural timbers including the corner posts and weatherbeam required considerable remedial work before reboarding could be undertaken. The tail carriage and superstructure was rebuilt in the early part of 2019.
