In about 1880, George Alvin Long, of Northfield, MA, built a steam-powered, 3 wheeled car, on this site in the Holman & Merriman Machine Shop. Later he built a gasoline-powered version. This was 3 years before Benz patented a 3-wheeler, although it became a production vehicle and Long's never did. The freedom and mobility that the car gave us is hard to imagine today. My grandfather was born in 1896 and said a family was moving and sold everything that didn't fit into a wagon. Said goodbye to all their friends, because they'd never see them again, and moved 25 miles away.
For bonus points there's another geocache in the stone wall across the street, near the threaded rod.
