Il cuore di Offida è piazza del Popolo, una di quelle piazze italiane che si ricordano a lungo per l’armonia, l’accostamento naturale di una molteplicità di stili e materiali, il calore che vi è racchiuso. Colpisce subito l’insolita forma triangolare, dovuta al riassetto tardo settecentesco, quando furono demolite alcune strutture ospedaliere e fu costruita sul lato sinistro la nuova chiesa della Collegiata, sotto la direzione di Pietro Maggi. La facciata della chiesa è un compendio di stili che vanno dal greco-romano al barocco, mentre l’interno è a pianta latina con tre navate. Nella cappella del transetto si trova il “palio del miracolo”, che ricorda quando nel 1850 la Madonna fece cessare la peste muovendo gli occhi.
Dal porticato del Municipio si accede allo splendido teatro Serpente Aureo, una meraviglia nascosta, quasi che il riso o la rappresentazione del dramma umano si dovessero occultare dietro il rigore dell’amministrazione. Fu realizzato nel 1820 su progetto dell’architetto Pietro Maggi e rimodernato nel 1862. E’ un gioiellino di concezione barocca, uno di quei teatrini all’italiana, con schema a ferro di cavallo, 50 palchi suddivisi in tre ordini, più il loggione e la platea, e profusione di stucchi e intagli dorati, di cui è ricca la provincia italiana.
The heart of Offida is “Piazza del Popolo” (People’s Square), one of those Italian squares which are remembered for a long time for its harmony, the natural combination of the multiplicity of styles and materials and the warmth which is enclosed within. The unusual triangular-shaped immediately strikes, which results from the reorganisation of the late 1700’s, when some hospital structures had been demolished and the new “Chiesa della Collegiata” (Collegiate Church) was built on the left side, under the direction of Pietro Maggi. The façade of the church is a compendium of styles ranging from Greek-Roman to Baroque, while the interior has a Latin floorplan with three aisles. The “Cappella del Transetto” (Chapel of the Transept) hosts the “banner of the Miracle” which reminds when the Virgin Mary made to cease the plague in 1850 by moving her eyes.
The porch of the City Hall leads to the magnificent “Teatro del Serpente Aureo” (Golden Snake Theatre), a hidden wonder, almost as if the laughter or the representation of human tragedy should be concealed behind the rigour of the city administration. It was built in 1820 on the project of the architect Pietro Maggi and renovated in 1862. It is a Baroque little jewel, one of those Italian-style small theatres, with a horseshoe-shaped floorplan, with 50 stages divided into three orders, in addition to the gallery and the stalls and characterised by the profuse use of stucco and gilded carvings, of which the Italian province is rich.
