La bellissima chiesa di Santa Maria della Rocca si trova su un impressionante dirupo al confine del borgo di Offida.
La chiesa è in stile romanico-gotico e fu eretta dal Maestro Albertino nel 1330 su una preesistente piccola chiesa benedettina. Attraverso una gradinata si accede alla cripta, dove si ammirano i bellissimi affreschi, presenti anche nella chiesa superiore, del Maestro di Offida, probabilmente un monaco, che si caratterizza per il modo di dipingere le aureole e di rappresentare Gesù Bambino sempre con un uccellino in mano.
Fuori, sul lato sinistro del primo gradino della scala che conduce alla chiesa è rappresentato un agnellino con in bocca un quadrifoglio: la credenza popolare vuole che se ci si posiziona sopra, percorrendo a ritroso la scalinata e a occhi chiusi, il desiderio espresso sarà esaudito.
La chiesa è visitabile dal martedì al venerdì 10-12,30/15,00-17,30; sabato e domenica 10-12,30/15.00-19.00.
The beautiful church of Santa Maria della Rocca is situated on an impressive cliff at the border of Offida.
The church is in romanic-gothic style and it was built in 1330 by Maestro Albertino on an earlier Benedectine church.The stairs lead to the crypt: here and in the upper church the beautiful frescoes by the Master of Offida, probably a monk, can be admired; he is characterised by the way in which he paints the haloes and the Holy Child, always portrayed holding a small bird in his hand.
Outside, on the left side of the first stairs which lead to the church a little lamb with a four-leaf clover in its mouth is carved. According to tradition, the lamb must be caressed walking backwards to curry favour with luck.
The church can be visited from Tuesday to Friday 10-12,30/15,00-17,30; Saturday and Sunday 10-12,30/15.00-19.00
