Il borgo prende il nome da San Genesio di Roma, mimo e attore, fatto martirizzare nell’anno 303 dall'imperatore Diocleziano per essersi rifiutato di rappresentare in scena, in modo burlesco, il battesimo sacramento dei Cristiani. Per questa ragione il Santo è diventato il patrono della gente di teatro e dappertutto nel borgo sbuca l’effigie di San Ginesio, detto il “santo istrione”: lo si può scoprire nella formella incastonata nel portale della Collegiata, nei capitelli delle sue esili colonne, nei dipinti quattrocenteschi, nei sigilli comunali, nelle pergamene miniate, mentre suona la ribeca (l’antenato del violino) o mostra la maschera.
Ancora oggi il martire Ginesio mette in scena la sofferenza e la bellezza del mondo, la vita e la morte. E segni di vita e di rinascita sono le croci maltesi e le stelle a sei punte, emblemi dei templari, e gli archi gotici con gli antichi stemmi, e poi il verde dei dintorni, gli infiniti panorami della Marca pontificia che guidano il pensiero.
San Ginesio is named after St. Genesius of Rome, a mime and actor martyred in 303 by emperor Diocletian as he refused to represent on stage in a burlesque manner the Baptism, a Christian sacrament. This is the reason why the Saint has become the patron of theatre people and the effigy of St. Genesius pops out all around the village, and he is known as the “holy histrion”: he can be discovered in the tile embedded in the portal of the Collegiate church, in the capitals of its slender columns, in the 15th-century paintings, in the municipal seals, in the miniated scrolls, as he plays the rebec (the ancestor of the violin) or shows his mask. Martyr Genesius still puts on stage today the suffering and beauty of the world, the life and death. Symbols of life and rebirth are represented by Maltese Crosses and six-pointed stars, emblems of the templars, and Gothic arches with ancient crests; and also the surrounding green and the infinite panoramic views of the Pontifical Brand which guide the thoughts.
