Geocache Description:

A nice easy cache and the terrain isn’t generally difficult. Please replace carefully so it is not visible to passers by. Cache is on left of footpath if approaching from Blandford Road. Cache placed with kind permission of Poole Borough Environmental Development Team.

The Southampton & Dorchester Railway, was built between these two great places and the whole line was designed by a Wimborne solicitor, Charles Castleman; the line’s nickname coming from his name and the meandering nature of the route. Opening day was the 1st of June 1847; a year later the line was  operated by the London and South Western Railway and with grouping in 1923 came under the umbrella of the Southern Railway. If you look above you, there is an embankment that carried the Old Line, as it is referred to and behind you is the current main line from London Waterloo to Weymouth, via Southampton, Bournemouth, Hamworthy and Dorchester. Two impressive brick bridges can be seen on Blandford Road and although they are similar you can see the bridge carrying the disused line is made of pale bricks whereas the later one is of red brick.
