The New England Franco-Route will guide you to the places, in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island where thousands of French Canadians settled to work, live and create new communities at the turn of the 20th century.
Lewiston, ME is a city of about 37,000 residents and is the second largest city in Maine. In the colonial era, Abenaki bands inhabited the region. Among these were the Androscoggin tribe, which lent its name both to the region and to its main waterway. People of European descent began settling the area in the late eighteenth century.
Found in the heart of the historic Petit Canada of Lewiston, what is now the Gendron Franco Center, was once Sainte Marie church. Saint Mary’s Church was the second to be built by the Franco Americans of Lewiston. The construction began when the parish was created in 1907 and was finished in 1927. Having been saved from demolition, the center was founded in 2000 to promote and celebrate Franco-American and Francophone culture. Furthermore, the center has two beautiful performance venues that welcome night shows, comedy series and musical performances from artists from all over the world.

Sauvé d’une démolition prématurée, l’édifice fut réclamé par le centre Gendron en 2000 afin de promouvoir et de célébrer la culture franco-américaine et—plus largement—francophone. Le centre contient deux salles qui, à chaque soir, peuvent accueillir des pièces de théâtre, des humoristes et des prestations musicales mettant en vedette des artistes provenant du monde
