I grew up in the age of Marvel comics, the Fantastic Four (FF) being one of my favourites. The four characters who gained superpowers after exposure to cosmic rays during a scientific mission to outer space were transformed into Mister Fantastic who can stretch his body into incredible lengths and shapes; the Invisible Woman who can render herself invisible; the Human Torch who can generate flames, surround himself with them and fly; the monstrous Thing, their grumpy but benevolent friend who possesses tremendous superhuman strength, durability and endurance due to his stone-like flesh. Needles to say the Thing was not very happy about his metamorphosis.
In the original synopsis that writer-editor Stan Lee gave artist Jack Kirby, Lee proposed making the Thing into 'the heavy.' Deformed, underprivileged and argumentative, Ben (the Thing) actually became the most lovable group member: honest, direct and free of pretension. He brought humour and pathos to the stories. Jack Kirby was a relentless talent. Many give him credit to being the driving force in creating incredible super heroes and menacing mega villains. Lee was the man credited in bringing a human element to superheroes - the emotions, conflicts and day-to-day mishaps. Lee was often likened to Mr Fantastic and Kirby to the Thing.
