Piazza del Popolo è una delle piazze più belle d’Italia.
E’ il salotto di Ascoli sin dal Rinascimento e deve la sua denominazione al Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo, uno dei principali edifici storici che, con la sua medioevale torre merlata, occupa la parte centrale del lato occidentale. Dai documenti medievali risulta che la prima conformazione della piazza aveva uno spazio più ridotto rispetto ad oggi, ed era delimitata da case–torri.
La piazza assunse la configurazione architettonica attuale nei primi anni del XVI secolo, quando vennero costruiti i portici con volte a mattoni rossicci e colonne in travertino su tre lati della piazza.
Il lato settentrionale è interamente chiuso dalle leggere e gentili forme gotiche del fianco destro della chiesa di San Francesco, cui è addossata la cosiddetta edicola di Lazzaro Morelli. Tutto il resto del perimetro è occupato da palazzetti rinascimentali a portici e logge.
La sistemazione rinascimentale della piazza rappresenta l'esatta applicazione dei principi teorici di Filarete ed Alberti che, riprendendo le teorie vitruviane, prevedevano piazze rettangolari con un rapporto proporzionale di 1:3 tra larghezza e lunghezza, e circondate da portici che ne esaltavano la funzione commerciale.
Tre curiosità:
1) la piazza è completamente pavimentata con lastre di levigato travertino apparendo chiara e luminosa, e in caso di pioggia assume un suggestivo effetto a specchio;
2) sulla recinzione attorno al campanile della Chiesa di San Francesco si trova una scultura marmorea che ritrae le intimità maschili, e fu costruita probabilmente nel Medioevo come simbolo di fortuna;
3) in questa piazza si svolgono due famose manifestazioni cittadine: il Carnevale e la Quintana, rievocazione storica di origine medievale con giostra equestre che si tiene due volte l’anno, a luglio e ad agosto.

Piazza del Popolo is one of the most beautiful squares in Italy.
It is the city’s parlour since the Renaissance and it is named after the “Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo” (Palace of the Captains of the People), one of the main historical building which occupied the central part of the western side, together with its medieval crenelated tower. The medieval records indicate that the original shape of the square was smaller as compared to today’s and was bounded by houses–towers. The square assumed its current architectural shape at the beginning of the XVI century, when the vaulted porches with reddish bricks and travertine columns were built on three sides of it.
The northern side is entirely enclosed by the light and gentle Gothic shapes of the right side of the “Chiesa di San Francesco” (St. Francis Church), onto which is leaned the so-called newsstand of Lazzaro Morelli. The remaining perimeter is occupied by Renaissance palaces with arcades and loggias which entirely close the eastern side and that opposite the church.
The Renaissance configuration of the square represents the exact implementation of the theoretical principles of Filarete and Alberti which, taking up Vitruvian theories, envisaged rectangular squares, with a proportional ratio of 1:3 of width to length and surrounded by arcades which exalted its commercial function.
There are three interesting facts:
1) the square is entirely paved with slabs of polished travertine, appearing clear and bright, assuming a striking mirror appearance when it rains;
2) a marble sculpture depicting male intimacy, probably created in the Middle Ages as a symbol of good luck, is situated on the fence around the bell tower of the “Chiesa di San Francesco” (St. Francis Church);
3) this square hosts two popular city events: the Carnival and the “Quintana”, a historical re-enactment of Medieval origins with equestrian jousting which is held twice a year, in July and in August.
