Hamilton penned the first essay of The Federalist Papers while on a journey by boat from Albany to New York City in October of 1787. By the time he disembarked from the sloop at Fishkill Landing, he had completed the entire first number. It appeared in print on October 27, 1787, in the New York Independent Journal. Hamilton also rented a house on DePeyster’s Point (today’s Denning’s Point) for a few months in the spring and summer of 1781.
