What’s this all about?
This is no ordinary countryside. Fruit, veg, herbs and flowers grown here reached markets across the country, from Glasgow to Penzance. For over 100 years, local men, women and children worked their densely packed market gardens plots by hand, in all weathers. To support this key local industry, a network of supporting trades – jam factories, transport companies and specialist tool makers – sprang up in the area.
With the gradual decline of market gardening since the 1960s, the landscape has changed, over 85% of the 1500 hovels have been lost and memories faded away. The Market Gardening Heritage project (2018-2021) created a lasting record of these buildings and memories for the future.
Geocache series
- The Market Garden Trail is a family friendly series of 4 traditional geocaches containing clues to a 5th puzzle cache. It is centred around 3 market garden hovels (or ‘ovels) built by local growers and restored during a project to preserve and celebrate this significant local industry.
- Geocaches are divided between the North Littleton community orchard and Field Barn in Cleeve Prior, both of which are publicly accessible at all times. These sites are run by the Vale Landscape and Cleeve Prior Heritage Trusts.
- Driving between North Littleton and Cleeve Prior is recommended for those looking for a short stroll.
- Walking route along the bridleway between North Littleton and Cleeve Prior is 2 ½ miles (4km) there and back. Please be aware that the bridleway can become difficult to use after wet weather, due to waterlogged sections.
- Bring a pen to sign the log book and let us know how you get on!
I hope that you find this an interesting variation on the caching experience. For a full list of all FYI caches in the series, please go to the series’ very own website http://fyigeocaching.co.uk where you will be able to access a Bookmark list.
If you know of any interesting / informative Interpretation Boards (I'm sure you do!), and would like to contribute to the continued expansion of the FYI series, you will also find placement guidelines there, as well as a Contact Form to apply for a series number.
