The Army was the first branch of the US military, initially established June 14, 1775 under the name "Continental Army." At the time, it was lead by Commander George Washington to lead the colonies in their war against Great Britan. Today the U.S. Army has 1.1 million soldiers and owns over 15 million acres of land across the states.
